What gets rewarded gets done.

This often quoted management cliché has an implication that is sometimes not fully grasped. If what gets rewarded gets done, this also implies that what is being done, is that which is being rewarded.

Whatever results we are achieving - when we look closely enough, it emerges that in some way we are getting what we are asking for - we are getting what we are rewarding.

So, if we are not achieving the results we want in our business, it can be extremely useful to first look inside the business - whether it be a sole trader or a large corporation - and see exactly what results we are asking for. Very often, these will not be the same as the results we think we are asking for.
